Rockwall police said an officer attempted to pull over a man driving a vehicle that matched one wanted by the Texas Department of Public Safety near Interstate 30 and Texas 205/John King Boulevard at about 7 a.m.

In a statement Thursday afternoon, Rockwall police said when officers tried to stop the driver, he jumped from the car and ran across the interstate and into a nearby wooded area.

A perimeter was set up and the area was then searched by as many as 75 police officers, sheriff's deputies and state troopers, including some on horseback and some with K-9 officers. The DPS also dispatched their helicopter to search for the man from above.

Rockwall police and county deputies are searching for a man who ran from a traffic stop, Sept. 3, 2015.

Just after 11:30 a.m., the sheriff's department said the man had been caught near the intersection of Industrial Boulevard and Justin Road, when he walked out of the wooded area on his own and surrendered.

"I guess just after a while he had enough and he just walked out into the roadway and basically gave up," said Sgt. Jeff Welch, with the Rockwall Police Department. "This guy actually came out looking like he was in shape. He was a little tired and hot and probably hungry, but he was in good shape."

The man, whose name is not being released due to another investigation, was not armed. Officials have revealed no other information on what charges he may face or why he was wanted.

During the search, officials with the Rockwall Independent School District said Utley Middle School, Jones Elementary School, Rochelle Elementary School, Dobbs Elementary School and Rockwall High School restricted outdoor activities until the man was caught.
