Man Pleads Guilty to Fraudulent Tax Returns

A U.S. attorney says a man has pleaded guilty to conspiring to use stolen information to file fraudulent tax returns so he could receive tax refunds.

U.S. Attorney Sarah R. Saldana of the Northern District of Texas says Roberto Boris Fernandez has pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit theft of public funds and one count of aggravated identity theft.

He faces up to five years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine on the conspiracy charge. The aggravated identity theft count carries a mandatory two-year consecutive sentence and a $250,000 fine.

His sentencing has been set for next year.

Authorities say Fernandez filed the false income tax returns through Turbo Tax, an online tax preparation service, using stolen names and Social Security information.
