A man was killed in a shooting involving the Dallas Police Department, police said Wednesday.

Police said the man was believed to be shooting at an apartment complex in the 3500 block of Wilhurt Avenue from a sport utility vehicle. Police followed the vehicle and saw several weapons thrown out the window.

The man then slowed down in the 1300 block of Dryden Avenue, opened the driver's door and began firing at police, investigators said. Officers returned fire, killing the man. The car then rolled down the street and into a fence.

A female passenger and a pit bull who were also in vehicle were not injured. Officers took the woman into custody for questioning.

Police have not yet determined why the man was shooting his gun at the apartment complex.

No other injures were reported in connection with the incident.

NBC DFW's Grant Stinchfield contributed to this report.
