Man Killed During Apartment Break-In: DPD

A man was shot and killed while attempting to rob the residents of an apartment Saturday morning,  according to Dallas police.

Homicide detectives responded to a shooting call at the Village Oaks Apartments in the 3500 block of  East Overton Road overnight.

According to police, the man had entered the apartment and threatened the owners with a gun.

Police said one of the residents pulled a gun from underneath the living room couch and shot the robber multiple times, killing him.

Dallas County medical examiners identified the alleged attempted robber as 28-year-old Reginald Melancon. Melancon died shortly upon arrival at Baylor Dallas Medical Center.

Detectives interviewed the people living in the apartment and said everyone cooperated with the investigation.

Police said the man who pulled the trigger was released and the case will be referred to a grand jury.
