Man Gets Life Term in Slaying of Texas Mom Selling Jewelry

A North Texas man has been convicted in the 2016 fatal shooting of a Dallas-area woman selling some of her jewelry to raise money to buy Christmas presents for her family.

Mario Hernan Lopez Gamez was convicted Monday of capital murder and received an automatic life prison term. Prosecutors in Fort Worth didn't seek the death penalty in the slaying of April Vancleave of Arlington.

Arlington police said Vancleave in December 2016 used a cellphone app to arrange a meeting with potential buyers at a store. They never showed up. She went home.

Police believe Vancleave was followed, attacked and robbed in the parking lot of her apartment complex.

Lopez was arrested in February 2017. A second suspect was arrested in mid-2017 and awaits trial on a capital murder charge.
