A Fort Worth man will spend life in jail without possibility of parole after slashing his ex-girlfriend and fatally stabbing her mother.
Tarrant County prosecutors said Samuel Velez was convicted of capital murder and will serve life in prison with no possibility of parole. Prosecutors waived the death penalty in the case, leading to the automatic life sentence.
According to prosecutors, Velez broke into the home of his ex-girlfriend, Yudith Pina, in August 2012 and stabbed her and her mother, Ana Gomez.
Officials said Velez broke into the trailer home while the family was at work, then waited for hours for Pina and Gomez to return home. Velez stabbed both women with a 7.5 inch blade repeatedly in the home.
Though Pina escaped from the home with injuries, Gomez died at the scene from at least 16 knife wounds.
Prosecutors said Velez confessed to the slaying.
