Man Fatally Shot by Garland Police Wasn't Armed

Two Garland police officers investigating a report of domestic violence shot and killed a man early Monday morning who they say they believed was grabbing a gun.

Abel Quinonez, 48, later died at a Mesquite hospital, according to a news release from Garland police.

Quinonez's estranged wife, who told police he attacked her with a crowbar and metal lamp post, was in stable condition Monday night at Baylor University Medical Center with injuries to her head, neck and arms.

Officers responding to a 911 call early Monday said the woman who answered the door had a head injury.

According to the release, Quinonez ran into a bedroom when he saw the officers and grabbed what was believed to be a gun. Bullets from two officers' weapons struck the man. Police later determined Quinonez was reaching for a metal lamp post that he had earlier used to attack his estranged wife.

On March 30, Garland police arrested Quinonez and charged him with aggravated sexual assault of a child. Police were investigating whether Monday's attack could have been related to that arrest. Quinonez was on parole after serving 17 years in prison for aggravated robbery.
