Man Dies While Working on West Texas Highway Bridge

Officials say a man working for a company that was repairing beams under a bridge in West Texas has died after a load of metal rods fell on him.

Runnels County Sheriff Bill Baird tells the San Angelo Standard-Times that the man died Tuesday morning at the work site in Ballinger, located about 200 miles southwest of Fort Worth.

Sixty-seven-year-old Jose Carmona-Rico from Tye was pronounced dead at the scene.

Texas Department of Transportation spokeswoman Karen Threlkeld says he was an employee of J.H. Strain and Sons Inc., a Tye company working as a contractor for the state agency.

Workers were repairing beams under the Elm Creek Bridge on U.S. 83.

Baird says the incident is under investigation.
