Police confirmed that an officer shot the man — later identified as James Dunaway — in the backyard of a home in the 1300 block of West Redbud Drive at about 6:30 p.m.

A department spokesman said officers were dispatched to a domestic dispute at the Arts Apartments at Park Place in the 600 block of Arcadia Street at 5:34 p.m. By the time officers arrived at the apartment complex, Dunaway had run from the scene.

"We had officers driving around the area looking for him," said Hurst Assistant Police Chief Steve Niekamp. "One of the officers chased him into the backyard at the residence."

Niekamp said the officer fired "several" times at Dunaway, who was armed with a gun. Niekamp did not know if Dunaway fired his weapon at the responding officer.

A second officer arrived at the scene, and police said the two officers placed Dunaway in handcuffs. When his condition worsened, the officers performed CPR until medics arrived.

Dunaway was transported to John Peter Smith hospital where he was pronounced dead.

No officers were injured, police said.
