Man Dies After Foot Chase With Dallas Officer

Off-duty officer gave chase after man allegedly steals from Home Depot

Dallas police are investigating the death of a man who died after a foot chase with an off-duty officer Tuesday.

Police said the officer, who works security at a Home Depot on Forest Central Drive, tried to stop the man, who allegedly stole merchandise at about 11 a.m.

The man fled, and the office chased him on foot for about 10 minutes. When the officer caught up to the man, a scuffle ensued.

Other officers arrived and performed CPR after noticing the man was having trouble breathing.

The man died at a nearby hospital shortly afterward.

Rasheed Aziz said he had just pulled into the plaza when the foot chase happened. He said the man didn't seem to take the situation seriously.

"Almost like it was a joke, like he wasn't afraid of anything, just going with the flow; the police officer was like, 'Come on, you got to stop,'" he said.

The man's death is under investigation.
