Police say gunfire at a North Texas apartment complex has led to a man detained for a mental health evaluation.

Wichita Falls police say nobody was hurt early Monday at the Stone Creek Ranch Apartments. Some residents who evacuated were allowed to return nearly three hours after the incident began.

Sgt. Joe Snyder says a caller told police he was the gunman and that he fired twice through his apartment door. Police say the man then went to a neighbor's unit, where a woman talked him into dropping his gun.

Police say the man falsely claimed his adult son was held at gunpoint at his apartment.

The unit was empty.

The son was reached by phone and told police he does not know why his father made up the story.
