Man Convicted of Capital Murder in Deputy's Ambush Slaying

A jury deliberated for less than an hour before finding a man guilty of capital murder in the random 2011 ambush slaying of a deputy stopped at a traffic light at a San Antonio intersection.

The Bexar County jury will now consider whether Mark Anthony Gonzalez gets the death penalty or life imprisonment without parole for the fatal shooting of Bexar County Sheriff's Sgt. Kenneth Vann.

Vann was shot 46 times while responding to a non-emergency call in his patrol car.

Investigators said Gonzalez was drunk and on anti-depression medication when he opened fire on Vann, leaving his body unrecognizable.

Testimony begins Tuesday morning in the penalty phase of the trial. Only one person has been sentenced to death in Texas so far this year.
