Man Charged in 2013 Slaying Flees San Antonio Murder Trial

A man charged with murder over a 2013 slaying in San Antonio has fled the start of his trial after stepping outside court to speak with relatives.

The Bexar County Sheriff's Office said 33-year-old Jose Gutierrez remained at large Wednesday.

Gutierrez, who had been free on bond, fled Tuesday as prospective jurors waited to be questioned. The case involves the fatal shooting of 31-year-old Raul Garcia.

Authorities say Gutierrez earlier asked for a new attorney but Judge Raymond Angelini denied the request. The judge then gave Gutierrez permission to tell his family members, who were waiting outside the courtroom, that they could be present for jury selection.

Prosecutors said Gutierrez left but never returned. His GPS ankle monitor was later found dumped near a fast-food restaurant.
