Man Arrested in Connection to Fatal Shooting in March

Dallas police say an 18-year-old man was arrested on Thursday in connection to a fatal shooting that took place last month.

According the arrest affidavit, Jonathan Umana-Amaya, 18, was arrested in the 1500 block of Cheyenne Road in connection to the shooting of Jose Esquivel on March 22.

Police said a source provided credible information about the incident on Thursday that led to Umana-Amaya's arrest. That source told authorities that Umana-Amaya confided that he set up Esquivel and planned to rob him.

The source said Esquivel stated that the suspect was going to have to shoot him, according to affidavit. Umana-Amaya then shot Esquivel, according to the source.

Back on March 23, a witness voluntarily went to the Dallas Police Department and stated that she and a friend went to 9700 block of Abernathy Avenue, where the shooting occurred, to engage in a drug deal, according to the affidavit.

The witness told police that Esquivel exited his vehicle and entered another vehicle. In the affidavit, she stated that when Esquivel exited the suspect's vehicle, he was shot by the driver.

Umana-Amaya is being charged with capital murder.
