Local Lawmaker Proposes Early School Schedule

Representative Jeff Leach of Plano, district 67, has proposed a bill that says each district can decide to start school two weeks earlier.

“HB 204 reestablishes local control in public education by providing school districts with more flexibility over their school calendar. I strongly believe that decisions as such ought to be made at the local level with community input - not mandated by politicians and bureaucrats in Austin.

Some parents said they are already on board.

"I think it would be great to start earlier. Summer lingers if you run out of things to do," said parent Shannon Crosby.

If the district decides to start early, that district will have the option of ending two weeks earlier, too.

"I don't think I see that as too much of a problem, I guess," said parent Shayne Williams.

Not everyone agrees, especially when it come to vacation planning.

"I guess I would prefer that it stay the same," said Margaret Butler, parent.

And the people at Hawaiian Falls aren't exactly falling for the idea, either. They have several water parks throughout North Texas. Their regional manager thinks this will be bad overall for the tourism industry. And adds that even if schools are out earlier, the weather can be unpredictable in May

"We expect about a 25 percent decrease if it passes. Obviously we don't want to see it voted or passed through," said Clint Hill, regional manager, Hawaiian Falls.

The bill will first have to make it to the floor for debate, and then be passed by both houses of the legislature.
