Local Chefs Step Up For One of Their Own

Walk into Dude Sweet Chocolate and you see a big board about a fundraiser this Sunday for sous chef Ulysses Galvan.

Galvan is battling leukemia for the second time and needs a bone-marrow transplant. Katherine Clapner, the owner and executive chef at Dude Sweet, wanted to help out so she reached out to the chef community.

“Ulysses Galvan has been with me off and on since 1999. We work together,” said Clapner. “I just wanted to do something. The bills are monumental and he is a father of three.”

Clapner said she and Galvan make a golden team. He is so dedicated that he kept going to the hospital but didn’t tell anyone at work until it was unavoidable.

Participating chefs include: Katherine Clapner; Joanne Bondy; Tim Byres and Lance Smith from SMOKE; Mynetta Cockerell; Jerry DeLaRiva, Samir Dhurandhar and Tommy Simpson from Nick and Sam's; Paula Lambert from The Mozzarella Company; Dan Landsberg from Dragonfly; Matt McCallister from FT33; Chris Patrick from Abacus; Vijay Sadhu; Abraham Salum from Salum Restaurant; Cody Sharp from Casa Rubia and Scott Tobey from Origins Cafe.

The fundraiser for Galvan will be held in a donated space at 3015 Trinity Groves Sunday at 5:30 p.m.  Tickets are $50 and a bottle of wine, per person, and include food and music. According to a flier, there will also be a silent auction for dining packages, wine, hotel stays and more.
