Live Large in Prosper

Prosper Mayor Ray Smith says he sends a personal note to every new resident of the city, a practice that's becoming increasingly time consuming.

Drive north on the Dallas North Tollway long enough and you'll enter the town of Prosper.

Star athletes like baseball player Torii Hunter and NFL Hall of Famers Randy White and Deion Sanders helped put Prosper on the map. Hunter and White still reside there, but the town is ironically headed to "prime time" status after the mercurial football star moved away.

Prosper is known as "A place where everyone matters," though, and residents will tell you how nice everyone is there.

"It's just, like, homey," Syndey Rowher said. "You know everyone and they're so sweet."

Top 10 Suburb

Real estate brokerage firm Movoto has ranked the top 10 North Texas suburbs for years, and the town of Prosper found itself on the list for the first time ever.

Deion Sanders' once sprawling property is being converted into a shopping center and more signs of growth are everywhere: Parks, churches, new homes and developments

"They are planned developments that include high-quality buildings and high-quality retail," Economic Development Corporation's Robert Winningham said.

And then there's the schools. Prosper has gone from a 2A district to a 5SA district in just a few years and it's only getting bigger, according to superintendent Dr. Drew Watkins.

"We finished the last school year at 7,257 and we're expected to be up over 1,000 over that next year," Watkins said. "The scary thing is that's just the tip of the iceberg."

Growing Small Town

Despite the city's growth, it's easy to notice Prosper's small-town feel. It's something the people who are developing the town say they are working hard to keep.

"The town will evolve," resident Pat Spaeth said. "It will still have some of its country charm as long as there are the Prosper people here and the heart is here."
