Little Elm On Guard After West Nile Found

Little Elm town leaders say they're on guard after their first West Nile virus positive test of the year, and they encourage residents to use the same caution.

On Friday the town announced that a mosquito test pool on Walker Lane had tested positive for the virus.

Fire Chief Joe Florentino said they are monitoring the area and treating standing water there with larvicide, but the town's policy is not to spray unless they start seeing people sick with the illness.

At this point Florentino said there is no immediate danger but they are aggressively working to inform the public of the positive test and remind them to practice mosquito safety to prevent getting sick.

That includes draining standing water, dressing in long sleeves and pants, using DEET pesticides and limiting outdoor activity during dusk and dawn.

Little Elm and several other cities around Lewisville Lake and other lakes in the Metroplex are keeping an extra close eye on the West Nile virus situation as they currently deal with extra standing water from the record rainfalls of May.
