Lewisville Residents Pack Up Ahead of Rising Waters

Dozens of people who live in a Lewisville mobile home park evacuated from their homes Friday night as the Denton Creek slowly rose out of its banks, threatening their houses.

"It's kind of scary because we don't know, like, our stuff is still in there. We can't take all of it," said resident Joselyn Torres, whose family quickly collected what they could – clothes, bedding, even the washer and dryer – and loaded it into cars.

The Torres family, along with many others who live in the Creekside Crossing Mobile Home Park, received written warning from the City of Lewisville Friday afternoon about the rising water.

"Homes along the western and southern edge of the park are more likely to see flooding in the backyard and under the house," read the flier, in part. "It is also possible that these homes may see some water reach the house. It is expected that the streets in these areas will flood also. If flooding does occur and it reaches the predicted height, you can expect water to remain high for several days."

The neighborhood was alive with activity approaching sunset Friday as people packed what they could.

"I'm hoping it won't get into the house," said Angela Velasquez, who, along with her two sons, left around seven in the evening. "I hope it doesn't get actually into the house – crossing my fingers."

Others, like Phillip Arkoos, could not bring themselves to leave.

With the electricity cut off to prevent a fire, Arkoos sent his wife and children to stay with relatives for the night. But he decided to stay behind.

"I'm just gonna stay here for the night, ride it out as much as I can," Arkoos said. "That way if I need to do a hurry up, get things out, I can. I'm just pretty much preparing for a worse-case scenario."

The Lewisville Office of Emergency Management opened an emergency shelter for people who need a dry place to sleep. The shelter is at the Fred Herring Recreation Center, located at 191 Civic Circle. Anyone who plans to use the shelter is asked to bring their own food, bedding and anything else needed for the night.
