Lewisville Firefighters Rescue Dog Stuck in Drain

It was supposed to be as simple as a bath for Lewisville resident Kelsey Coburn’s dog, Trixie, but minutes into covering her small dog in soapy water, Coburn started to panic.

Trixie, who weighs just a few pounds, was standing on her back legs when one of her paws slipped through the drain and wouldn’t come out.

After several tugs, Coburn realized Trixie’s paw was stuck.

“I started freaking out. I panicked. I literally cried. I was freaking out and I felt horrible,” Coburn said.

“I didn’t know what to do so I called my mom and she told me to call the police officers, because they’d call the fire department out here and they’d help me,” she said.

“The call came in from dispatch as a dog stuck in a sink,” said Lewisville firefighter Billy McWhorter.
He admitted this was a new one for his team.

“Well, first we tried to get it out with oil, cooking oil, to see if we could get it to slip out. That didn’t work,” McWhorter said.

While some firefighters worked to keep Trixie calm, others started to disassemble the sink.

They were forced to remove the entire drain, still attached to Trixie’s paw, and take her for a spin in the firetruck to a local veterinarian.

Once there, Trixie had to go under anesthesia while vet office employees along with firefighters used ring cutters to break the drain loose.

“Oh, extremely grateful! I can’t tell you how thankful I was for them to come out and help,” gushed Coburn, cradling a now-free Trixie.

“It’s probably a once-in-a-lifetime type of call for us,” said McWhorter, who added that he was thankful his administration allowed him and his team to go on such a call.

As for Trixie, she was back home resting comfortably after her trip to the vet Friday.

Coburn said when it comes to bath time again, she’s going to leave that job to someone else.

“It was definitely scary. I think it was more scary for me than my dog! Because my dog will forget. I won’t,” she said.
