State authorities are cleaning up sulfuric acid that leaked from five drums abandoned at a Houston-area storage facility.
Galveston County Emergency Management Coordinator Garret Foskit said Sunday the leak has been stopped but cleanup crews are still on-scene at the facility in Texas City. The highly corrosive chemical leaked from five 250-gallon containers and caused the brief closure Saturday of the Texas City Wye, a section of road near the Gulf Freeway.
Foskit estimates about 75 full or partially filled 250-gallon containers were left at the facility, though it's unknown whether all contained sulfuric acid.
State agencies, including the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, have responded to the leak. A Texas City official said air tests did not find any detectable threat.
