A long awaited addition to the Texas State Park system is finally beginning to take form west of Dallas-Fort Worth.
On Wednesday, leaders at Texas Parks and Wildlife revealed the preliminary design ideas for the new Palo Pinto Mountain State Park near Strawn, about a 90 minutes west of downtown Fort Worth.
TPWD purchased the 4,000 acre area in 2011. It's former ranch land in the Cross Timbers region on the Stephens and Palo Pinto county lines.
Parks and Wildlife Director Brent Leisure said they specifically purchased the land to create a park with residents of D-FW in mind.
“We live in the concrete jungle,” said Leisure.
TPWD has been taking public opinions on designs for the park for about the last two years, and Leisure said the designs revealed Wednesday in Fort Worth would really give residents a starting point to hone in on a final design.
He said the Texas Legislature has started allocating funding for the design of the park and he hopes, with continued progress, the gates could open in the next three years or so.

TPWD will hold another public meeting to discuss the designs on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in the Strawn High School cafeteria.
The organization will also take written input on the project received by September 1.
