Lancaster Officer, Dallas Chief's Son Among Shooting Victims

A Lancaster police officer and the adult son of Dallas Police Chief David Brown were among the three dead in a shootout at a Lancaster apartment complex Sunday night.

At about 6 p.m. Sunday, police responded to a shooting in progress on the 900 block of River Bend Drive.   When they arrived, a grisly gun battle took place.

"Officers responded to the apartment complex and started looking for the shooter," Dallas County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Kim Leach told the Dallas Morning News. "At the time, the suspect turned and shot one of the officers, killing him. Another officer returned fire at the suspect and shot and killed him."

The blue four door sedan was taped off and covered with blue tarp to hide one of the bodies. An officers bullet riddled police car was also near the scene.

Lancaster officer Craig Shaw was killed in the shootout.  The third person killed was identified Monday as Jeremy McMillian, 23, of Lancaster.

Lancaster Chief Keith Humphries said Shaw was a five-year veteran of the Lancaster Police Department and a member of the Southwest Regional Response Tactical Team. Shaw was also the father of two children; a 13-year-old daughter and 7-year-old son.

Chief Humphries said in a press conference Monday morning that Shaw is the first Lancaster officer that has fallen in the line of duty. Humphries said the loss will be hard on the police force, many of whom showed up to police headquarters on Sunday night to support the fallen officer.

Late Sunday night, Dallas Police officials confirmed that David O'Neal Brown Jr. was one of the fatalities. First Assistant Chief of Dallas Police, Charles M. Cato, released the following statement:

It is with deep sadness that I report Chief David Brown’s son has passed away this evening. Chief Brown is with his family this evening and we ask that you respect his privacy at this difficult time.

As Chief Brown mourns the loss of his son – he also mourns the loss of the fallen Lancaster Police Officer who has served his community with honor for many years.

We don’t know all of the facts of the incident at this time.  Lancaster Police are investigating the incident and will keep Dallas Police apprised of the investigation and will impart details on this incident to the media.

Chief Brown asks that the Dallas community keep his family in their prayers this evening - and in the days to come – as his family tries to comprehend the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.

A trust fund has been set up for Craig Shaw's children and family at Chase Bank.  Donations can be made at any Dallas-Fort Worth location.
