K-9 Cop Dies in Hot Car

A police dog died Wednesday after being left unattended in a patrol car.

Liberty, a bloodhound who had served in the Greenville Police Department for 7 years, was found dead inside the vehicle.

The shift lieutenant found the dog after her handler notified the department that he wasn't sure if he had returned her to her kennel.

The handler, whose name has not been released, had worked with Liberty since she was a puppy and is said to be devastated at the loss.

The circumstances of Liberty's death are being investigated by the department.  Liberty's handler has been reassigned to administrative duties pending the outcome of the investigation.
