Irving to Receive Patriotic Makeover

Thousands of flags will be planted along a major Irving road Tuesday and Wednesday as the city prepares for Independence Day.

More than 40,000 American flags will line the sidewalks on MacArthur Boulevard in Irving during the 2015 Great Flag Caper.

“It’s a symbol of unity,” event organizer Nell Anne Hunt said.

Hundreds of volunteers will start planting the flags at about 5 p.m. Tuesday. By Wednesday, an entire 10 mile stretch will be decked out in the red, white and blue.

“We need to celebrate the positive things about our country instead of dwelling on the negatives,” Hunt said.

Hunt started putting out flags in her neighborhood about 20 years ago. Every year, the practice grew bigger and bigger. Now she runs the 501c3 organization and decorates the entire city for Independence Day.

“We’re all the same under our flag,” she said.

This year’s theme is “We don’t live in America. America lives in us.”
