Investigation Continues in Crowley ISD Bus Crash

A day after two Crowley ISD school buses collided while taking students home on Monday, the district said everything was back to normal.

All of the injured students were released by Monday night.

Crowley ISD says there are no changes to the bus operations at this time, as it's still looking into what happened.

On Tuesday, Superintendent Dan Powell sent a letter home to all district families about the incident.

Dear Crowley ISD Families,

Monday after school, two school buses from Summer Creek Middle School were involved in an accident. It happened on Summer Creek Drive after one bus rear-ended another bus. Thankfully, there were no major injuries to any of the students on board. Some of the students were taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries or as a precaution to be checked out. All students were released from the hospital and returned home Monday evening.

Our first priority Monday was to take care of all of the students. We are now working to get the details of how the accident happened.

Crowley ISD contracts with Durham Transportation to provide safe, reliable school bus service. Bus drivers in our district travel a combined 6,000 miles each day and are dedicated to getting your children to school and back home safely. Durham has an incredible safety record in Crowley ISD and across the nation as they transport over 1,000,000 students daily.

Please join me in thanking our bus drivers, the first responders from the Ft. Worth Fire and Ft. Worth Police departments, MedStar, the administrators from Summer Creek Middle School and Sue Crouch Intermediate School, and the CISD Safety Team who arrived on the scene Monday to take such great care of our students.

Student safety is always our top priority in Crowley ISD and we are all dedicated to keeping your children safe at school and on our buses.

Sincerely,
Dan Powell

Durham School Services also released a statement on Tuesday about the incident.

"The incident that occurred yesterday afternoon is currently under investigation and both drivers have been placed on leave pending the outcome, which is customary. Our drivers undergo behind-the-wheel and in-classroom training; a part of that training includes a student management module. Should an incident occur while transporting students, the bus driver’s responsibility is to take measures to keep all students calm and safe. This includes reporting the incident to dispatch, who will alert the appropriate authorities if necessary. As we are still investigating, it would be inappropriate to offer further comment."

Shonda Smith, whose son, Spencer, suffered a broken bone in his nose, as well as whiplash and an ankle injury, said she had no concerns about her son riding the bus again.

Spencer spent the day at home recovering on Tuesday.
