Deadly Ending to Chase Closes Interstate 635 in Mesquite

Authorities continue to investigate after a police chase late Tuesday afternoon ended in a deadly self-inflicted shooting and also the arrest of a man wanted in an Arlington assault case.

Investigators said it began when Balch Springs police initiated a traffic stop at the request of U.S. Marshals for the Arlington aggravated assault case.

The driver of a red pickup truck wouldn't pull over, however, and a short chase ensued. Eventually, the vehicle, which had two occupants, rolled to a stop on the shoulder of Interstate 635 at U.S. Highway 80 in Mesquite.[[289995021, L]]

When officers approached the truck, they said they found the driver deceased from an apparent gunshot wound to the head. Police did not fire any shots.

The passenger, who was not injured, was arrested and taken to the Mesquite Jail. Police said he is a suspect in an Arlington assault case in which the victim recently died in the hospital.

Police are waiting for results from the medical examiner to determine if the victim in that case, Derek Livingston, died as a result of the assault.

Part of a North Texas interstate has reopened in Mesquite after being shut down due to a crime scene investigation.

Arlington police said there is still one more person suspected in the Arlington assault case who remains on the run, but they would not release either suspects' name.

It's not clear why the driver of the pickup truck shot himself, police said. They said the driver was not a suspect involved in the Arlington case.

Officers involved in the chase and investigation were from police departments in Arlington, Balch Springs and Mesquite, as well as U.S. Marshals.

Northbound lanes of Interstate 635 were closed for more than an hour as officials worked at the scene.
