Dallas Store Serves Ice Cream With Special Twist

An ice cream store made for Texas opened on Lovers Lane in Dallas Saturday.

It's called Howdy Homemade, and it has three things going for it:

  1. The "world famous" Dr Pepper Chocolate Chip Ice Cream. Owner Tom Landis of Texadelphia restaurant fame concocted it.

"Either God or the devil [helped with the idea]," he joked. "We think we've come up with a flavor here that Texans will love."

  2. The 14 special needs students who work there, like 19-year-old Coleman Jones, are in the Transitions program at Highland Park High School.

"Since I'm the vice president here and I'm one of the people who run this place, I work with the students and help them transition into the work atmosphere," Jones said.

  3. A boss like Landis believes in his team and the value in those who are too often overlooked.

"Maybe Coleman's not gonna be as fast as some, but this isn't an industry about speed as it is about being friendly when you come in," he said about calling the store Howdy. "That's just friendly, right?"

Landis is the sole investor in Howdy Homemade. He knows there may be more loss than profit for a while, but he's banking on the investment he puts in his team.

"This is not a business about food. It's a business about people first," he said. "Part of our goal here is to get us a place in the State Fair of Texas and really showcase our employees and what Texans can do."

"I believe this is a store where you can thrive," said Jones.
