Hunters Stock Up for Deer Opener

It’s the weekend hunters across the state wait the entire year for: the deer season rifle opener.

Texas Parks and Wildlife expects hundreds of thousands of hunters state-wide to participate in the annual event.

Despite the hot temperatures so far this season, they believe it will be a strong year for white tails.

For many, though, the yearly fun starts with an extended weekend.

Many hunters took the day off work Friday to stop by stores like the Bass Pro Shop in Grapevine and supply up.

Employees at the store said they see a lot of the same faces coming through every year en route to their favorite hunting spots.

The tradition of the yearly hunt was clear walking through the aisles as groups of friends and even entire families said they were getting up early to go into the fields on Saturday morning.

A Bass Pro manager showed off their growing kids and women’s sections as they said those crowds tend to grow every year.

Last season, Texas Parks and Wildlife said they saw an all-time low number of hunting injuries in the state with only two deaths; a trend they hope to continue and improve on this season.

Experts recommend all hunters keep safety at the top of mind and make sure both their equipment and their training is up to date before going out this season.
