How Often to Shop Around for Credit Card Deals

While shopping for clothes or groceries is fairly common for many people, credit card shopping isn't done as frequently.

But it should be.

That's the opinion of Matt Schulz, a senior analyst with CreditCards.com. Why the push to change cards?

"If you've had the same credit card for the past five or 10 years, you've missed out on a lot really good deals," he said. "There's never been a better time to look for a credit card than right now."

We see the ads on TV, in magazines, newspaper and in the mail. Every credit card company wants us to switch to their card. But what's the advantage to shoppers?

"The sad truth is that folks who are new customers on a credit card get treated better than folks who are long term customers in terms of deals," Schultz stated.

All sorts of incentives are offered to new customers. It could mean miles, cash back, better interest rates and more.

While it is a good time to shop for a new credit card, you may not want to shop for too many, too soon.

"If you can handle it and you can pay your balances off and pay your bills on time, two to three cards in a year is perfectly fine because you can get a lot of sign-up bonuses and it can send you all around the world," Schultz said.

Schultz suggested not switching more than two or three cards at a time, though.

"Too many cards in too short of a window is [a problem] because it can make you look desperate and reflect poorly on you on your credit," he said.
