A Houston-area man has been charged with beating his 2-year-old stepdaughter and leaving her blind.
Harris County jail records show 26-year-old Angel Martinez was being held Thursday on an injury to a child charge. Online jail records don't list an attorney for Martinez, who was booked Monday and bond set at $75,000.
The mother took the girl to a hospital Dec. 12. Prosecutors say the skull injuries are so severe that the child is now blind.
A criminal complaint says Martinez told investigators he threw the girl into the air but couldn't catch her and her head hit a chair. Doctors say the injuries don't appear accidental.
The mother faces a charge of injury to a child by omission. Hospital officials Thursday didn't immediately provide information on the girl's condition.
