Experts say the number of homeless in Houston has declined but advocates do not expect a cut in federal funds.
The Coalition for the Homeless of Houston/Harris County Homeless reported Tuesday that the city's homeless population is down 14 percent from last year.
The Houston Chronicle reports the state's largest city had 7,356 homeless on Jan. 31. That compares with 8,538 homeless on Jan. 31, 2011.
Coalition officials track shelter numbers and those considered unsheltered as a basis to seek federal money.
Coalition CEO Marilyn Brown believes the group's work with service providers led to the decline in homeless numbers. She does not expect funding cuts because of increased government concern over homeless people not finding shelter.
Houston, with nearly 2.1 million people, is the nation's fourth largest city.
