Houston Doctor Charged With Poisoning Her Lover

Trial is getting underway for a 43-year-old breast cancer doctor based at Houston's famed Texas Medical Center who's accused of poisoning a fellow physician boyfriend with coffee laced with ethylene glycol.

The chemical is common additive in automotive antifreeze but also is used in labs at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center where Ana Maria Gonzalez-Angulo and another cancer researcher and doctor, George Blumenschein, both worked.

Court documents identify the couple as in "a casual sexual relationship" when Blumenschein became ill and survived kidney failure after she made and served him two cups of coffee at her home early last year.

Gonzalez-Angulo was arrested five months later and charged with aggravated assault.  Her attorney says she's innocent.

Opening arguments before a Houston jury are scheduled for Monday.
