Houston Babysitter Charged in Scalding Death

A Houston babysitter has been charged with injuring a child after police say a 2-year-old girl suffered fatal burns while in her care.

Authorities said 20-year-old Carmen Pleasant drew the bath that scalded 2-year-old Nevaeh Cornwall in July. Authorities said Pleasant waited 12 hours to take the child to the hospital, where she later died from the third-degree burns.

Pleasant told authorities she wanted to heat the water before the girl got into the tub. She said the toddler entered the water when she wasn't watching. Doctors said the burns indicate the child was forcibly immersed.

Pleasant remains jailed on the felony charge after being arrested earlier this week. She is being held at the Harris County Jail on $50,000 bond. Online jail records didn't indicate an attorney.
