At about 8:50 p.m. Dallas police officers were called to the 7600 block of Ashcrest Lane after gunshots were reportedly heard. Officers arrived to find a man, later identified as 25-year-old Lasalle Jones, shot several times and his girlfriend injured.

Police said Jones and his girlfriend were parked in front of a house and had been involved in a verbal altercation with the home's owner, 56-year-old Michael McDonald. McDonald drew a weapon during the altercation and fired multiple times at the couple, killing Jones.

Jones' girlfriend was injured in the shooting, police said, but is expected to recover from her injuries.

McDonald fled the scene after the shooting, but returned a short time later and surrendered to police. He was taken into custody and charged with murder.

"It's crazy," McDonald's fiance, Shanita Collins, said. "I never even knew he owned a gun."

Collins said McDonald is a minister who was protecting his home from Jones. She said she was trying to separate Jones and his girlfriend — Collins' daughter — after he barged into the house.

"I'm just praying for the best," Collins said.
