Homeowner Continues Property Tax Protest With DCAD

A homeowner who lives in Highland Park, is protesting what he is calling a “hidden tax” linked to the value of his home.

Stephen White grew up in the home off Mockingbird Lane that has been across the street from the country club for more than 50 years. During his first hearing, he learned he was being charged a 10 percent premium "for a view of the Dallas country."

"I was a little taken back,” he said.

A Dallas County Appraisal District official said it's not a “viewing tax,” but a desirable factor that is calculated into the value of his property.

White said he wonders why residential property owners have to pay for the “view” or location, yet commercial property owners do not.

“They don’t charge anyone who lives at the Ritz Carlton or the high rises around the club," he said. "They don’t charge the business that surround the golf course either."

He is hoping to get answers during arbitration.
