Highland Village City Council Approves First Read of E-Cigarette Ordinance

At their May 9 meeting, the Highland Village city council passed their first read of an amendment to the Health and Sanitation Ordinance relating to the use of e-cigarettes.

The amendment categorizes e-cigarettes as the "smoking of tobacco products"  within the ordinance.

With this ordinance e-cigarettes will be treated the same as tobacco products in that their use is prohibited in certain public places, such as public parks, indoor areas of restaurants, retail stores and offices.

The ordinance will be considered for a second read at the Council meeting on June 23. If approved at that meeting, the effective date of the ordinance will be October 1, 2015 to allow time for an education process of businesses and citizens and appropriate signage.

The City of Highland Village currently has an ordinance in place prohibiting the sale and possession of e-cigarettes to minors.
