Beer Cans Fly During High-Speed Chase

Chase speeds topped 90 mph

Dallas County deputies have just released the names of the two men who were arrested Tuesday morning after an unusual high-speed chase.

Deputies say John Torres, 19, and Alexis Aviles, 22, both took a turn in the driver’s seat and sent beer cans flying as they tried to get away.  The chase started near downtown Dallas at about 2:30 a.m. and led deputies to Mesquite and back to the Oak Lawn area of Dallas.

The two men finally stopped at Casa Blanca Apartments near Wycliff Avenue on Sylvester Street, where Aviles apparently lives.

Deputies said it was a strange end to a wild ride.  Torres cursed out our camera, and stuck out his tongue as he sat in the back of a squad car awaiting his ride to jail.  Investigators said he refused to give them his identification at the scene, which adds another charge.

Aviles seemed to be a little more subdued during the arrest.

Deputies said the pair was in Aviles’ Chevy Impala and that they nearly rear-ended a marked sheriff’s department squad car on Interstate 30.  The officer followed the car and watched it tailgating other cars and driving erratically.

The driver refused to stop and deputies said they couldn’t use stop sticks to blow out the tires because other drivers were too close.  At times, the chase topped 90 miles per hour.

Deputies said around Ferguson the guys started tossing beer cans out of the window.  Then, they apparently pulled off quite a maneuver in the moving car when they traded places behind the wheel.

Deputies believe the passenger slid under the driver, and the driver hopped over into the other seat.  The mid-chase switch landed both of them in jail on felony charges of evading arrest.

The sheriff’s office said alcohol could be involved  and more charges are possible.
