Health Services Encourage Heat Safety

Health care providers are encouraging a renewed focus on heat safety on Friday.

Friday, May 24, is National Heat Safety Awareness Day and local health care providers want to remind citizens of the dangers of leaving children and pets in parked cars.

Every year, children and pets die of hyperthermia or other heat-related issues.

Health officials encourage parents and caregivers to "Beat the Heat, Check the Back Seat" as a reminder to make sure children or pets aren't left in a vehicle unattended.

There is a criminal charge for leaving a child or pet inside a vehicle unattended. Additionally, Child Protective Services may investigate cases where a child is left unattended in a vehicle for more than five minutes.
