Head of Texas Sex Offender Oversight Agency Quits

The volunteer chairman of a Texas agency that supervises hundreds of sex offenders deemed too dangerous to live in society has resigned.

The Houston Chronicle reports Dan Powers cited the overwhelming workload in his resignation letter Tuesday to Gov. Rick Perry.

Powers is a child advocacy official in Collin County.

The resignation leaves two members of the Office of Violent Sex Offender Management board. Christy Jack is chief prosecutor for the Tarrant County District Attorney's Office. Leo Longoria is a former Mission police chief.

Perry chief of staff Kathy Walt says Powers will serve until a replacement is named.

The office has drawn scrutiny since its March decision to relocate more than two dozen violent sex offenders into a Houston-area boardinghouse without giving lawmakers or residents advance notice.
