Police said a wrong-way driver in a Volvo wagon crashed into a Volkswagen Passat in the 1600 block of North Josey Lane, near R.L Turner High school at about 12:30 p.m.

The wrong-way driver, identified as 61-year-old Deborah Lynn Winters, was transported to Parkland Memorial Hospital, where she later died.

The other driver was not injured.

Officials reopened Josey Lane at about 3 p.m.

Police said they are now working to find out what caused Winters to drive the wrong way.

“That’s the biggest question and that’s what our investigators are out here trying to figure out,” said Carrollton Police spokeswoman Jolene DeVito.

“They’re certainly going to be looking into everything," Devito said. "Talking to witnesses, they’re working the scene out here, mapping it out and trying to figure out what could’ve caused her to go the wrong way.”

DeVito said police are grateful no students were hurt.

“Obviously it is a busy area and certainly students [are] milling around here at lunchtime, as well. We are very grateful that there weren’t any other injuries, certainly,” said Devito.

NBC 5's Amanda Guerra and Holley Ford contributed to this report.
