Having Feral Fun

Fall Feral Hog Festival coming to Ben Wheeler, Texas

OK. I’m in … I think.

Next weekend marks the third annual 2010 Fall Feral Hog Festival, World Championship Wild Hog Cook-Off, and Fall Feral Follies in Ben Wheeler, Texas.

This little piggie hoedown — or is it a hootenanny? — dubbed Hog Hev’n, takes place Oct. 22-23. Check the Ben Wheeler Development Co. website for particulars like times and exact locations of the events, but it’s Ben Wheeler, so how hard can it be to find such a big event in a small town?

Anyway, festivities include the aforementioned cook-off, which comes with some pretty sweet prize money, the feral hog parade, the Fall Follies, multiple bands, a pig-catching contest, a pie-throwing contest, a hog-calling contest, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and oooo weeee, don’t all that sound like fall feral fun.

But wait, there’s more. Ms. Stacey Gilchrist, the 2009 Hog Queen, will crown the 2010 Hog Queen at the culmination of the Fall Feral Hog Festival Queen pageant.

Nah, on second thought, I’m out.

Bruce Felps owns and operates East Dallas Times, an online community news outlet serving the White Rock Lake area. He wonders if Todd Staples knows about this ... or Hank Gilbert. See there? Equal time.
