Investigators say the deaths of a South Texas couple appear to have been a murder and a suicide.

Preliminary autopsy results Tuesday indicated 53-year-old Jose Elias Colmenares of Harlingen died of asphyxiation by hanging.

Harlingen police say his wife, 55-year-old Herlinda Trujillo, died of blunt force trauma to the head. Sgt. John Parrish says police are trying to determine what was used to strike the woman.

Police discovered the bodies Monday night after a relative had contacted authorities.
