Habitat for Humanity Transforming Parts of Dallas One Neighborhood at a Time

Habitat for Humanity is transforming parts of Dallas one neighborhood at a time.

The organization recently finished its campaign to raise $100 million for its signature project, Dream Dallas, an initiative to revitalize, reclaim and reinvent neighborhoods in Dallas’ most impoverished areas.

From 2010 to 2015, Dallas Habitat led an intergovernmental, multi-agency campaign that focused on five neighborhoods deserving quality, affordable homes in Dallas.

The five neighborhoods included were West Dallas, South Dallas/Fair Park, Bonton/Ideal, Lancaster Corridor and Joppa.

Additional homes in other Southern Dallas neighborhoods were also built and refurbished.

Lakeisha Oatman lives in the Joppe or Joppa community. (Signs in the neighborhood read both ways.)

"We built ours from the ground," she said of her Habitat home.

She's lived in the home for nearly ten years.

"We lived in a lot of apartments," said her daughter Scyesha Jones.

Jones was 11-years-old when the family moved into the house.

"I went to 13 different schools. Once we got this house, I was able to stick with one school and finish off high school. I made a lot of friends," she said.
