Gunmen Open Fire on Mexican Border Mayor's Convoy

Authorities in the Mexican border state of Tamaulipas say gunmen opened fire on a convoy carrying the mayor of the border city of Matamoros, Leticia Salazar.

The state government says Salazar and her bodyguards were not injured in the attack late Sunday.

The assailants were travelling in a car and a sport utility vehicle when they intercepted the convoy on the outskirts of Matamoros.

Salazar often travels in a bulletproof vehicle.

Salazar's conservative National Action Party condemned the attack and called on the federal and state government to catch the attackers.

Matamoros has been the scene of bloody confrontations between factions of the Gulf cartel in recent weeks.

Salazar has said her administration has made great strides in combatting violence in Matamoros.
