Coppell police are releasing the name the person they say shot a recent high school graduate as he played basketball with friends.
Investigators with the Coppell Police Department said Tuesday that 18-year-old Montay Kentrall Howard shot 18-year-old Charles West in a dispute over money.
West, who recently graduated from Coppell High School and had committed to play football at Brigham Young University in the fall, told police he was playing basketball with friends at Coppell Middle School East when someone spotted Howard holding a gun and walking their way.
West said he began to run moments before Howard began firing multiple shots.
One of the shots hit West in the left bicep, police said. He was taken to Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas where he was treated Sunday and released Monday.
During an interview with police, West said he and Howard, who also attended Coppell High School, had an argument earlier in the day over money.
Howard was taken into custody without incident and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a 2nd-degree felony. He is currently being held in the Carrollton Police Jail without bond.

Police said video recorded on a smartphone showed the shooting as it occurred, but the person who shot the video is unknown at this time.
