Grass Fire Put Out Near UNT Discovery Park Campus

The Denton Fire Department contained and put out a grass fire near the University of North Texas' Discovery Park campus Thursday afternoon.

In a tweet at about 3:30 p.m., the Denton Police Department asked everyone to stay clear of the campus to allow the fire department enough room to fight the fire.

The police department closed down northbound Elm Street at Nicosia while the fight was underway.  At about 3:40 p.m., NBC 5 learned the fire has been contained and by 4 p.m. Elm had been reopened to traffic as firefighters put out the last of a few hotspots.

The Discovery Park campus is north of the main UNT campus, near the intersection of U.S. Highway 77 and state Highway 288.  Officials said there was no damage at the campus and that all campus activities will resume a normal schedule after 5 p.m.

A Red Flag Warning, which means extreme fire weather conditions are active, is in place for all of North Texas until 6 p.m. Thursday.
