The fire started in the garage at about 4:45 a.m. Thursday in the 8200 block of Jerry Jo Drive, according to a North Richland Hills fire spokesperson.

A grandfather was home with his two young grandchildren, boys ages3 and 7.

Smoke detectors inside the home woke the family up, giving them time to escape, the spokesperson said. The three family members made it out of the home safely. However, a family dog and cat died in the fire.

Fire investigators are working to find out what started the fire.
