Grand Prairie Police Add Cowboy Hats to Uniform

The Grand Prairie Police Department just added a new item to the standard uniform, a cowboy hat.

The department says safety is very important for all of it's officers, and these waterproof cowboy hats will protect all of the officers from the brutal Texas sun and also provide warmth in the winter months.

Currently 30 to 40 of the 270 officers have the cowboy hats. The department says wearing the hat is not mandatory, but demand has been so high that "The Best Hat Store" in Fort Worth has already run out. The store has ordered more specifically for the police department.

GPPD hopes to have all the officers outfitted by September in time for the annual Cowboy Cops Rodeo event in Fort Worth.

Money to pay for the new hats will come out of this years police department operating budget.
