Golfer Dies While Trying to Retrieve Ball

Garland man breaks neck while trying to collect a golf ball.

A 61-year-old Garland man was killed Friday after officials say he fell over an embankment while trying to collect a golf ball.

William Michael Grant was playing in a golf tournament at the Sherrill Park Golf Course when he overshot a green, according to police statements in the Dallas Morning News.

Grant was trying to retrieve the stray ball when he slipped from the embankment, falling about 10 feet, according to witnesses. Sgt. Kevin Perlich told the DMN it appeared Grant broke his neck in the fall, but that had not been confirmed by the medical examiner.

Grant was pronounced dead at Parkland Memorial Hospital at about 5:15 p.m. Friday.
